Ioannes 97 was a monk, one of the brothers serving under Peter of Atroa (Petros 34); he is recorded in several anecdotes as a travelling companion of Petros 34; he accompanied him to Ephesos and Chonai when the persecution of iconophiles resumed under Leo V (Leo 15); he was with Petros 34 at Hippos in the mountains of Asia; he accompanied Petros 34 and his brother Paulos 26 when they went to visit their mother (Anna 3); and he was with Petros 34 at Dele near Prousa in Bithynia when the latter had a vision of a leading member of the Church who defected (presumably to join the iconoclasts): Vita Petr. Atr. 13, p. 101 (ἕνα τῶν ἀδελφῶν σπουδαῖον καὶ ἐνάρετον), 16, p. 105 (τοῦ προμνημονευθέντος διακόνου Ἰωάννου; the word διακόνου probably here means attendant), 18, pp. 109-111 (τὸν ἀνωτέρω λεχθέντα Ἰωάννην), 20, p. 115 (τῷ ἑαυτοῦ συναγωνιστῇ Ἰωάννῃ). All these events seem to have occurred during the reign of Leo V (Leo 15).
