Hildeprand 2 was one of the Lombards who fled to Rome in 773 when Charlemagne (Karoulos 1) invaded Italy and who submitted to pope Hadrian I (Hadrianos 1); at the request of his fellow fugitives, he was appointed dux of Spoletium by pope Hadrianos 1; in this way the ducatus of Spoletium became subject to the see of St Peter: Lib. Pont. 97. 32-33. A Lombard, he was the dux of Spoletium in 788 when, with the dux of Beneventum, Grimoald 6, and some Franks under Winigis (Winichis 1), he fought successfully against imperial troops in Italy; they encountered imperial forces under Theodoros 13 in Calabria and won an overwhelming victory at no cost to themselves and returned with much booty and many prisoners; Hildeprand 2 was later succeeded as dux of Spoletium by Winigis (Winichis 1): Annales Regni Francorum s.a. 788.
