Grimoald 1 was King of the Lombards; his name in the Greek source is given as Argouses; he sent envoys and gifts to the emperor Constantine VI (Konstantinos 8) for the hand of Euanthia 2 (sister of the empress Maria 2 and a daughter of Philaretos 1); the emperor sent her to Italy to marry him: Nicetas, Vita S. Philareti, p. 143, 20-25. The marriage is recorded also in Erchempert, Hist. Lang. Benevent. 4-5 (p. 236) ("hac etiam tempestate idem Grimoalt neptem Augusti Achivorum in coniugium sumpsit nomine Wantiam"). The unnamed king of Langobardia was allegedly influenced by the example of the emperor Constantine VI (Konstantinos 8) in abandoning his first wife and marrying his mistress: Theod. Stud., Ep. 31, Vita B Theod. Stud. 252D, Vita A Theod. Stud. 137, n. 3. Grimoald 1 presumably divorced Euanthia 2. Possibly Grimoald 1 was the son of Adalgisos 1.
