Georgios 61 was bishop of Nikopolis Ano (Nikopolis Superior); in 787 he attended the first session of the Second Council of Nikaia (the Seventh Ecumenical Council), on September 24; in the list of those present he is styled Γεωργίου ἐπισκόπου Νικοπόλεως ἄνω: Mansi XII 998. His see was apparently represented by a deputy at the second session: Mansi XII 1110 (... καὶ τοποτηρητὴς Νικοπόλεως). This cannot refer to either Nikopolis in Epirus Vetus or Nikopolis in Armenia Secunda, both placed elsewhere in this list of names; see Anastasios 17 and Gregorios 24. Neither this man nor his see is named again at the Council. His see is perhaps Nikopolis in Thrace, less probably perhaps that in Phrygia.
