Georgios 33 was deacon and chartophylax of Hagia Sophia (the Great Church of Constantinople): Riedinger, p. 24, line 1, p. 24, line 5, p. 204, line 16, p. 208, lines 4-5, p. 232, lines 19-20, p. 498, line 4, p. 498, line 19, pp. 558-564, pp. 580-586, p. 640, lines 1, 9, 11, 14, p. 642-644 (= Mansi XI 213, 216, 341, 344, 360, 509, 512, 544-545, 556-560, 588, 589) (διάκονος καὶ χαρτοφύλαξ τῆς ἐνταῦθα ἁγιωτάτης τοῦ Θεοῦ μεγάλης ἐκκλησίας or similar), Lib. Pont. 81. 8 ("Georgio diacono et chartofylace ecclesiae Constantinopolitanae"). He was in the bureau (sekreton) of the patriarch of Constantinople: Riedinger, p. 204, line 16 (= Mansi XI 341) (one of τινες τοῦ σεκρέτου τοῦ ἁγιωτάτου πατριάρχου Κωνσταντινουπόλεως). At the first session of the Third Council of Constantinople (the Sixth Ecumenical Council) on 7 November 680, he was sent to fetch copies of previous ecumenical councils from the patriarchal library: Riedinger, p. 24, lines 1-6 (= Mansi XI 213-216), cf. Lib.Pont. 81. 8 (sent to fetch "codices ex bibliotheca ecclesiae"). At the eighth session, on 7 March 681, he was among those named by the bishop of Melitene, Theodoros 26, as jointly responsible with him for a statement read out to the council noting that none of the previous ecumenical councils had in fact made any ruling on the doctrine of One or Two Wills; with most of the others named, he denied all knowledge of the document, but was nevertheless told to produce a statement of faith in order to satisfy the Council: Riedinger, p. 204, line 13-p. 208, line 4 (= Mansi XI 341-345). Later in this session he was sent to fetch texts of the Fathers from the patriarchal library: Riedinger, p. 232, lines 19-22 (= Mansi XI 360). He was one of the group of suspected heretics admitted shortly after the start of the ninth session to defend themselves; he like the others agreed to present a statement of his faith: Riedinger, p. 268, line 3, p. 276, line 9 (= Mansi XI 381, 385). They all presented identical declarations at the tenth session, which were accepted: Riedinger, p. 390, line 8-p. 396 (= Mansi XI 449-455). At the eleventh session (March 20) he was questioned about works by Makarios 1 and Stephanos 17 in the possession of the patriarchate; he told the Council that they were in the chartophylakion under him (ἐν τῷ κατ' ἐμὲ χαρτοφυλακίῳ) and was sent to fetch them; he produced them and vouched for their authenticity to the Council: Riedinger, p. 496, line 21-p. 500, line 4 (= Mansi XI 509-512). During the twelfth session (March 22) he was sent by the Council to fetch from the chartophylakion volumes (κωδίκια ἠτοι ῥέγιστρα: p. 562, line 8) containing letters of the former patriarch Sergios and the former pope Honorios to compare the texts with those cited by Makarios 1: Riedinger, p. 558, line 17-p. 564, line 1 (= Mansi XI 544-545). A proposal at the thirteenth session that he also produce letters and other writings by the former patriarchs Pyrrhos 1, Petros 2 and Paulos 2, as well as by Kyros of Alexandria (Kyros 2) and Theodoros of Pharan, was rejected as unnecessary at first, but the Council changed its mind and Georgios described the documents which he had to hand, having fetched them from the patriarchal chartophylakion at an earlier session; these were then read: Riedinger, p. 580, line 22-p. 588, line 2 (= Mansi XI 556-557). He swore a solemn oath that he had found no writings addressed to the patriarchs Thomas 2, Ioannes 2 and Konstantinos 3 which supported the doctrine of One Will and One Energy; he then produced certain writings from the times of Pyrrhos, Paulos and Petros for the Council to examine for monothelete ideas: Riedinger, p. 616, line 24-p. 626, line 14, p. 638, line 2 (= Mansi XI 577-581, 588). At the fourteenth session (April 5) he again produced copies of the proceedings of the Fifth Ecumenical Council for inspection, swearing that they had not been tampered with to his knowledge since he found them in the patriarchal library: Riedinger, p. 640, line 1-p. 644, line 4 (= Mansi XI 588-589).
