Galaton 1 was a priest; in 787 he was present at the Second Council of Nikaia (the Seventh Ecumenical Council) where he represented the bishop of Syracuse, Stephanos 50; he is attested at the first, fourth and seventh sessions and was possibly present at all eight sessions of the Council, from 24 September to 23 November 787: Mansi XII 994-XIII 486. In the list of those attending the first session he is styled Γαλάτωνος πρεσβυτέρου καὶ τὸν τόπον ἐπέχοντος Στεφάνου ἐπισκόπου Συρακουσίων: Mansi XII 994. At the fourth session he subscribed the statements read out from the Fathers in support of the veneration of icons; he is styled Γαλάτων ἐλάχιστος πρεσβύτερος καὶ ἐκ προσώπου ἀρχιεπισκόπου Σικελίας: Mansi XIII 137. At the seventh session he subscribed the statement of the faith adopted by the Council; he is styled Πλάτων (sic) ἀνάξιος πρεσβύτερος καὶ ἐκ προσώπου Στεφάνου ἐπισκόπου Συρακούσης: Mansi XIII 384 (the Latin version, at 383, calls him "Galato indignus presbyter et vicarius Stephani episcopi Syracusae").
