Gaianos 1 was a Stoudite monk, mentioned in several letters of Theodoros 15 (Theodore the Stoudite) written between c. 809 and 816; in 809/810 he remained loyal to the Stoudite position on the Moechian controversy but retained his freedom of movement and was able to visit other monks who were scattered to various places (cf. Ep. 49, p. 140, lines 32-33: καλῶς ἔχει καὶ τὰ τοῦ στερροῦ Γαϊανοῦ, διελθόντος ἐν παντὶ τόπῳ σχεδόν, ἔνθα ἡ διασπορὰ τῶν ἀδελφῶν); he frequently delivered letters from Theodoros 15 and died in a shipwreck together with Zosimas 5 while on one of these missions in late 815 or early 816: Theod. Stud., Epp. 49, pp. 139-144; 105, pp. 222-223; 109, p. 227; 112, pp. 230-231; 114, p. 233; 118, p. 237; 153, pp. 273-274.
