Ferdulf 1 was a native of Liguria, he became dux of Forum Iulii after the death of Ado 3; he is described as a slippery and arrogant character ("Ferdulfus ducatum suscepit, qui de partibus Liguriae extitit, homo lubricus et elatus"); he is said to have so coveted the glory of a victory over the Slavs that he bribed Slav leaders to invade his territory; he had a quarrel with one of his own officers, Argait 1, as a result of which, when the Slavs invaded, Ferdulf 1, out of rivalry, led his army to destruction in a battle in which he and Argait both perished: Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. VI 24. In this battle under Ferdulf ("quae sub Ferdulfo facta est") the two sons of Sicuald 1 perished: Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. VI 45. Ferdulf was succeeded as dux of Forum Iulii by Corvolus 1: Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. VI 25.
