Christophoros 49 was patriarch of Alexandria in succession to Eustathios 62, supposedly in year twenty of Harun al-Rashid (Harun 1) (a. 806); he was afflicted by paralysis and had to hand over the administration of the see to Petros 147; he occupied the see for thirty two years, until his death: Eutychius Alex. 1128AB.

Patriarch of Alexandria, Christophoros 49 received from Theodoros 15 (Theodore the Stoudite) a letter containing a copy of the iconoclast teachings to examine, a description of the current persecution under Leo V (Leo 15) and a request for his prayers and for help for the victims; he is styled τῆς ἀποστολικῆς σου κορυφῆς and τῇ ἁγίᾳ σου ψυχῇ: Theod. Stud., Ep. 275 (a. 818; addressed τῷ τὰ πάντα ἁγιωτάτῳ πατρὶ πατέρων, φωστῆρι φωστήρων, κυρίῳ μου δεσπότῃ μακαριωτάτῳ πάπᾳ Ἀλεξανδρείας). During the persecution under Leo V (Leo 15) Theodoros 15 wrote to the four patriarchs describing the persecution and asking them to help the victims: Vita B Theod. Stud., 289C, Vita C Theod. Stud., 285, Vita A Theod. Stud., 192D-193A.

Christophoros 49 was one of the three patriarchs named as authors of a letter about the veneration of icons addressed to the emperor Theophilos 5, following a church council, in 836: The Letter of the Three Patriarchs (ed. The letter is dated in April 836.

Christophoros 49 was patriarch of Alexandria from 817 to 848; see Grumel, Chronologie, p. 443.
