Aphthonios 1 was a Stoudite monk, addressee of a letter jointly with his fellow monks Agapios 3 and Karterios 1 from Theodore the Stoudite (Theodoros 15), in late 818 or early 819; addressed as a trio of brothers (τριὰς ἀδελφική: p. 557, line 3), they were praised by Theodoros 15 after they were punished for refusing to obey the iconoclast hegoumenos Leontios 29, to whom they were at the time subject; Aphthonios 1 is punningly described as abundantly endowed with endurance (σὺ ὁ ἐν ὑπομονῇ δεδαψιλευμένος ἀφθονώτατα Ἀφθόνιος: p. 558, lines 22-23) : Theod. Stud., Ep. 402, pp. 557-558 (addressed Τοῖς εἰς τὰ Στουδίου ἀδελφοῖς). The same three men are alluded to in a later letter (Κατήχησις: p. 570, line 1) of Theodoros 15, written in May or June 819, after Leontios 29 had repented of his iconoclast stance: Theod. Stud., Ep. 410, pp. 570-572 (περὶ ὑμῶν τῶν τριῶν ὅτι ἡνώθητε ὑπὸ μεταμελείας τοῦ ἐλεεινοῦ Λεοντίου: p. 572, lines 62-63).
