Apelates 2 was basilikos protospatharios; owner of a seal dateable to the ninth century: Schlumberger, Sig., p. 618, no. 1 (no facsimile) = Mordtmann, Conférence, p. 38. The text given by Schlumberger reads: Κ(ύρι)ε βοήθει τῷ σῷ δούλῳ Ἀπελάτις βασηλικῷ πρωτοσπαθαρίῳ. Mordtmann identified the owner with Apelates 1. This may be the seal published by Mordtmann, "Byz. Molybdoloullon" I, p. 71, no. 11; dated by Zacos and Veglery, Seals, p. 990 (note on 1728, cf. Apelates 6), somewhat later than the eighth century, this seal has the name and title: Ἀπελάτις βασιλικὸς πρωτοσπαθάριος. Likhachev, Molivdovuly, p. 144, identified the owner of this seal with Apelates 1 and Apelates 5 (possibly following Mordtmann).
