Apelates 1 was styled ὁ Πέρσης, Leo Gramm. 251; ὁ Ἀπελάτης ὁ Πέρσης, Leo Gramm. 253, Georg. Mon. Cont. 837; ὁ Ἀπελάτης ὁ τοῦ Πέρσου, Georg. Mon. Cont. 840, Ps.-Symeon 688; ὁ Ἀπελάτης, Ps.-Symeon 685. He conspired with Basil I (Basilios 7) to murder the emperor Michael III (Michael 11) on 23 September 867; he and Iakobitzes 1 wounded Basiliskianos 1 and threw him down from the imperial bedchamber: Leo Gramm. 251, Georg. Mon. Cont. 837, Ps.-Symeon 685 (the texts show some confusion because they did not recognise that Apelates was a name). He subsequently died of illness, eaten by worms (σκωληκόβρωτος): Leo Gramm. 253, Georg. Mon. Cont. 840, Ps.-Symeon 688. See Winkelmann, Quellenstudien, pp. 88, 89, 94.
