Anthimos 16 was a monk in the Stoudite monastery; addressee of a letter from Theodoros 15 (Theodore the Stoudite) written between 821 and 826 (in the reign of Michael II, Michael 10); he is addressed as ἀδελφέ (p. 631, line 4), and referred to\n by Theodoros as τὸν ἐμὸν υἱὸν καὶ μαθητὴν (p. 631, line 8) and ὁ ἀπολωλώς μου υἱός (p. 632, line 37); he had deserted the monastic life on more than one occasion, first apparently before the persecution of iconophiles under Leo V (Leo 15) (ἀπεπήδησας πάλαι τῆς ἀσκητικῆς παλαίστρας: p. 631, lines 12-13); then he returned at the start of the persecution (εἶτα ὀψέ ποτε ἐπανῆκες πρὸς ἡμᾶς ἐν τῇ ἀπαρχῇ τοῦ διωγμοῦ: p. 631, lines 15-16); later, during the persecution, he planned to leave again but after guidance and advice from the unnamed oikonomos (Naukratios 1) and Dionysios 6 chose instead to remain a monk and go into exile (τὴν καλὴν φυγαδείαν εἵλου: p. 631, lines 19-20); later he again left the monastery (perhaps under Michael II, Michael 10) and became involved with a woman or women (ἐπέστρεψας πάλιν εἰς τὸν βόρβορον τῆς ἁμαρτίας, φθείρων καὶ φθειρόμενος ὑπὸ γυναικός, μᾶλλον δὲ γυναικῶν: p. 632, lines 25-26), and Theodoros 15 wrote this letter to him begging him to return to God; he was apparently in a close relationship with the monk Dionysios 6 (ὑπόστρεψον, συγκολληθεὶς τῷ καλῷ σου ἀδελφῷ Διονυσίῳ: p. 632, lines 41-42): Theod. Stud., Ep. 447, pp. 631-632 (addressed Ἀνθίμῳ τέκνῳ). He is also mentioned in another letter written by Theodoros 15 to the monk Stephanos 135; he is referred to as ὁ ἀββᾶς Ἄνθιμος (p. 762, line 2) and τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ σου Ἀνθίμου (p. 762, line 5); he had visited Theodoros 15 with news about Stephanos 135, with whom he was apparently living (they were not sharing everything - οὐ κοινοποιεῖτε πάντα: p. 762, line 7) but with whom he was at odds; the two men are referred to by Theodoros as τέκνα (p. 765, line 84): Theod. Stud., Ep. 513, pp. 762-765 (addressed Στεφάνῳ τέκνῳ, the letter was written between 821 and 826, under Michael II, Michael 10).
