Anthimos 1 was the son of the emperor Constantine V (Konstantinos 7); he was born in 768/769 (indiction 7): Nic. Brev. de Boor 76, Mango 86. He was half-brother of Leo 4, brother of Christophoros 1, Eudokimos 1, Nikephoros 5 and Niketas 5. He was made nobilissimus (νοβελίσιμον) in 776 by his father, Konstantinos 7: Theoph. AM 6268. In August 792, after the tagmata tried to make Nikephoros 5 emperor in place of Constantine VI (Konstantinos 8), Konstantinos 8 had Nikephoros 5 blinded and cut off the tongues of Anthimos 1, Christophoros 1, Niketas 5 and Eudokimos 1: Theoph. AM 6284, Zon. XV 12. 13. They apparently were living in the palace of Therapia in 797, when they were involved in a conspiracy against the empress Eirene 1; it was discovered and they were all exiled to Athens: Theoph. AM 6290, Zon. XV 13. 18-19. Yet another conspiracy involving them was discovered in 799 and this time Eirene 1 gave orders that they should all be blinded: Theoph. AM 6291 (see Nikephoros 5), Zon. XV 13. 20-21. In 812 the brothers were living under guard on the island of Panormos; following another conspiracy they were exiled to Aphousia (in the sea of Marmara) (see Nikephoros 5): Theoph. AM 6304.
