Anonymus 308 was the khagan (cacanus) of the Avars, living in Scythia; the fugitive Lombard king Perctarit 1 took refuge with him (in c. 662), but when Grimoald 3 threatened war Anonymus 308 asked Perctarit 1 to leave: Paul. Diac. Hist. Lang. IV 51 ( ad regem Avarum cacanum ), V 2 ( eidem cacano Avarum regi ). At the request of Grimoald 3 (662/671), Anonymus 308 attacked Forum Iulii and defeated and killed the rebellious Lombard dux Lupus 1; however the Avars then ravaged and plundered the territory and refused to retire; Grimoald 3 therefore gathered an army and, convincing the khagan that he had overwhelming numbers, persuaded Anonymus 308 to withdraw to his own lands: Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. V 19-21. Cf. also Anonymus 6.
