Anonymus 256 was a gaoler (τινα καπικλάριον) at the praitorion in Constantinople, where Stephen the Younger (Stephanos 2) was interred; he told his wife (Anonyma 33) secretly that the emperor's policies would destroy them as Stephanos 2, a very holy man, had been imprisoned there: Vita Steph. Iun. 158.16-159.23 (1161A- 1164A). He apparently remained a gaoler at the praitorion during the eleven months when Stephanos 2 was held there (160.4); cf. Anonyma 33.
