Anonymus 171 was perhaps a spatharios and kommerkiarios (or perhaps chartoularios) of the Anatolikoi; owner of a seal of uncertain date, possibly eighth or ninth century: Schlumberger, Sig., p. 736, no. 1 (facsimile). Obv.: remains of a cruciform monogram of Θεοτόκε or Κύριε βοήθει with τω - σω - δου - λω in the corners. Rev.: ..... - ....θαρ - ...χπρ..?.. τον - Ανατ[ολικων]. Much of the text on the reverse is missing and the surviving letters are not certain. Schlumberger wanted to read ..χπρ as [κ]ουμ[ε]ρ[κιαριοσ]). A better alternative might be χαρ[τουλαριοσ], i.e. he may have been spatharios and chartoularios of the Anatolikoi. Cf. Leo 228 and Philaretos 9.
