Anonymus 57 was a monk living at Philomelion; a hermit, he had a reputation for virtue and also for being able to foretell the future; this reached the ears of Bardanes 3 Tourkos, who had imperial ambitions and visited him to enquire about his prospects; the monk supposedly warned Bardanes 3 to abandon his ambitions, or otherwise he would lose both his sight and all his property; the monk however followed this by foretelling that two of Bardanes 3's attendants, Leo 15 and Michael 10, would successively become emperors, while a third, Thomas 7, would be proclaimed emperor but would not gain the throne and would die wretchedly; Bardanes 3, who at first believed his prophecy, rejected the addition scornfully and so ignored the monk's advice: Theoph. Cont. I 2 (pp. 7-8), II 11 (p. 52), Scyl., pp. 9-10, Zon. XV 19. 4-10 (τινα μοναχὸν ἐν τῷ Φιλομηλίῳ ἀσκούμενον καὶ προλέγειν τὰ μέλλοντα πιστευόμενον ἀπελθών). After Leo 15 became emperor in 813 he sent rich gifts to the monk, but the messenger discovered that he had died; his place was now occupied by a monk called Symbatios (Symbatios 7): Theoph. Cont. I 15 (p. 26), Scyl., p. 14., Genesius I 6, 13, Zon. XV 19. 20-21. See also Anonymus 188.
