Anonymi 3 were two laymen (κοσμικοὺς δύο) from Smyrna who accompanied the hegoumenos and priest Euthymios 3 on a visit to Peter of Atroa (Petros 34) for his blessing; one of them had a wife and was a τοποτηρητὴς and the other, who was unmarried, hoped to become one also, being well qualified (ἄξιος γὰρ ἦν πρὸς τὴν τοιαύτην ἀξίαν); Euthymios 3 suggested that the latter become a monk and resign the world, but the former resisted the idea; the saint's knowledge of their secret thoughts allegedly astounded them: Vita Petr. Atr. 73 (pp. 203-205). The date was during the reign of Theophilos 5, possibly between the outbreak of persecution (832/833) and Petros 34's return to St Porphyrios (835/836).
