Textual SourcesVita Gregorii Decapolitae, by Ignatius the Deacon,ed. F. Dvornik, La Vie de Saint Grégoire le Décapolite et les Slaves macédoniens au IXe siècle (Paris, 1926), pp. 45-75 (hagiography)

Anastasios 38 was a monk in the monastery (of St Menas) under St Gregory the Decapolite (Gregorios 79) at Thessalonike; described (by Ignatios the Deacon) as distinguished for his piety and his asceticism (ἐπ' εὐλαβείᾳ καὶ ἀσκητικῇ πολιτείᾳ σεμνυνόμενος); he was a source of information to Ignatios 9 about Gregorios 79 and about a journey which he himself made under the auspices of Gregorios 79 from Thessalonike to Constantinople with Georgios 136; he had planned to visit Constantinople by boat and had already loaded his baggage when Gregorios 79 summoned him to meet Georgios 136 and escort him by land, with the warning that he would save Georgios 136 from dangers; they went first to Christoupolis, where Georgios 136 was arrested by soldiers of the unnamed Kaisar (perhaps Alexios 2) and then liberated through the intervention of Anastasios 38; then they went on to Boleron, where Georgios 136 was again arrested, by the magistros (Anonymus 292) of the Kaisar, and again liberated after the intervention of Anastasios 38; they then reached Maroneia and took a ship which conveyed them safely through enemy-held territory to Constantinople; Anastasios 38 decided to remain there and Georgios 136, his business done, returned to Thessalonike: Ignatios, Vita Greg. Dec. 18-19. After three months Gregorios 79 arrived in Constantinople and stayed with Anastasios 38 before departing to visit Mt Olympus in Bithynia; Anastasios 38 told how he returned suddenly from Bithynia, having miraculously learned of the arrival of one of his disciples from Thessalonike: Ignatios, Vita Greg. Dec. 20. Possibly identical with Anastasios 71.
