Agapetos 4 was basilikos koubikoularios and protobestiarios; during a period of Arab attacks on Asia Minor, and after the capture of Amorion (in 838), Agapetos 4 accompanied Leo 251 on a visit to St Ioannikios (Ioannikios 2) (near the monastery of Antidios) for his blessing; during the visit they were approached by petitioners wishing to secure the intervention of the empress Theodora 2 to try to secure the release of one of their relatives, Euandrios 1, whom the Arabs had taken captive; they discussed the matter with Ioannikios 2, who prayed and then expressed his conviction that if the matter were left to God the man would soon be free; Leo 251 and Agapetos 4 then departed with Ioannikios 2's blessing: Petrus, Vita Ioannicii 62 (Ἀγαπητὸν τὸν βασιλικὸν κουβικουλάριον καὶ πρωτοβεστιάριον), cf. Sabas, Vita Ioannicii 50 (telling the same story more briefly and making no mention of Agapetos 4). For the date, between 838 and 846, see Leo 251.
