In Tabari Abdullah 8 is called either Ibn Abbas or Abdallah b. Abbas; he was `Abdallah b. `Abbas, a cousin of the Prophet Muhammad; see Encyclopaedia of Islam, vol. I, pp. 40-41, s. n. `Abd Allah b. al-`Abbas. In AH 49 (Feb. 669/Jan. 670) he was one of those who accompanied Yezid 1 on his expedition against Constantinople: Tabari XVIII, p. 94. See also Abdullah 3, Abdullah 9 and Abu Ayyub 1. After the death of Ali 1 he gave his support to Mu`awiya 1 and became one of his advisers: see Tabari XVIII, pp. 3, 9, 14, 18, 186, 225. He died in AH 68 (July 687/June 688); see Encyclopaedia of Islam, cited above.
