Zoe 1 was the great granddaughter of Photeinos 9; she became Augusta and was already dead when the author of book two of Theophanes Continuatus was writing: Theoph. Cont. II 22 (p. 76) (Ζωῆς τῆς ἐν μακαρίᾳ τῇ λήξει θεοστέπτου Αὐγούστης). She was the fourth wife of the emperor Leo VI and was the mother of the emperor Constantine Porphyrogenitus (Constantine VII). Her nickname was Karbonopsina. See further in PBE II.
