Zacharias 12 was epitropos (i.e. procurator) of the imperial domus of Mangana (ἐπίτροπος τῶν βασιλικῶν οἴκων τῶν ἐπιλεγομένων τὰ Μάγγανα); he was made responsible by the emperor Leo V (Leo 15) for guarding Niketas of Medikion (Niketas 43) when the latter returned from Prokonnesos to Constantinople (in 815) and reaffirmed his support for the veneration of icons; he treated Niketas 43 well: Vita Nicetae Medicii 43. He was captured by barbarians while on his way to Thrace on official business but was released after Niketas 43 prayed for him: Vita Nicetae Medicii 44-45. The date was 815; Zacharias 12 was captured by the Bulgars and released under the terms of the peace treaty negotiated with them in late 815 or early 816. The Mangana was apparently once owned by the emperor Michael I (Michael 7) (see Vita Ignatii, in Mansi XVI 257). The title of Zacharias shows that it was already an imperial domus under Leo V (Leo 15) (successor of Michael 7), having presumably been confiscated by the state, and was managed by an imperial official with the title procurator (epitropos). Later it was under the Curator of the Mangana; see Oikonomides, Listes, p. 318.
