Wilchar 1 was archbishop of Vienne; he received the pallium from pope Gregory III (Gregorios 7): Lib. Pont. 92. 18 (later recension only; "qui etiam venerabilem virum Wilcharium partibus Franciae in civitate Vegenna dato pallio archiepiscopum eum esse constituit"). See also Duchesne, Lib. Pont., p. 425, n. 35. The Chronicle of Ado mentions him as contemporary with Charles Martel (Karoulos 2) but states that he visited Rome and received the pallium under a pope Stephen (PL 123, 121-123) (perhaps Stephen III (II), Stephanos 8). He was still alive in 771, according to the Annales Laurissenses Maiores s.a. 771.
