Unulf 1 was a loyal personal follower ("fidelissimus vir") of the Lombard king Perctarit 1; he accompanied him into exile among the Avars and then on his return arranged an amicable meeting between him and Grimoald 3; later, when Grimoald plotted to kill Perctarit 1, Unulf 1, Anonymus 310 and Anonymus 311 prevented the attempt and assisted Perctarit to escape from Ticinum: Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. V 2. He himself sought sanctuary in the basilica of the Archangel Michael at Ticinum; he was brought before Grimoald 3, who praised him for his loyalty to his master and allowed him to keep all his wealth and property: Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. V 3. Later, with Grimoald's permission and support, he took all his servants, horses and moveable furniture from his house and went to join Perctarit 1 in the kingdom of the Franks: Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. V 4. See also Anonymus 311.
