In the year 1028 Sel. (716/717) `Obaida (Ubayda 1) commanded a large army assembled by Sulayman 4 on the Meadow of Dabiq and led it into the lands of the Romans; they made camp in Thrace and `Obaida led an invasion of the land of the Bulgars, but was heavily defeated and lost most of his men; the remainder were so pressed by the emperor Leo III (Leo 3) that they were forced to eat their own pack animals to survive: Chron. 819, p. 15, 17-24 = pp. 10-11, Chron. 846, p. 234, 6-13 = p. 177 (Chabot) = p. 583 (Brooks).
