Tribounas 1 was a hypatos or patrikios; owner of a seal dateable to the sixth or seventh century: Schlumberger, Sig., p. 479, no. 16 (facsimile). Obv.: +Θεο - τοκε β - οηθη - +. Rev.: +Τρι - βου - πατ. The resolution of the reverse is uncertain. The attempt to restore the name of Tribonianus is to be rejected and some name such as Tribounas read instead (see PLRE III, p. 1341, Tribunas 2, and T. Honoré, Tribonian (London 1978), p. 58). What is uncertain is whether the reverse should be interpreted as Τριβο(υνᾷ) ὑπάτ() or as Τριβου(νᾷ) πατ(ρικίῳ).
