The name of Thoumamas 1 is variously spelt in the MSS of Theophanes, viz. Θουμάμας, Θουμαμᾶς, Θουμαμας(no accent), Θουμανάς, Θουμανᾶς, Οὐτθμᾶς, Οὐτθμάς ανδ Ἰθουμάμας; in Anastasius Bibliothecarius he is called "Ithimamas". An Arab; son of Baka (Θουμάμας ὁ τοῦ Βάκα); in 777 he raided Roman territory and returned with prisoners: Theoph. AM 6269. In 778 he settled in Dabekon (εἰς τὸ Δάβεκον) and revolted; he also sent an army against the Roman armies who were active around Germanikeia, but it was defeated and five of the commanders (ἀμηράδες) were killed before it retreated: Theoph. AM 6270, cf. Baladhuri, tr. Hitti, p. 295 (Thumamah ibn al-Walid al-`Absi led the summer expedition in AH 161, Oct. 777/Sept. 778, and sent a detachment against Michael 5 at Marash). In 780 he was sent into Asia by Harun 1 with fifty thousand men; he was defeated by Michael 5 Lachanodrakon and his brother perished in the battle: Theoph. AM 6272.
