Thomas 5 was a vir gloriosissimus, apo hypaton; he was one of the laymen who attended the Third Council of Constantinople (the Sixth Ecumenical Council); he was present only at those sessions which the emperor also attended (sessions one to eleven and eighteen, from 6 November 680, to 16 September 681) and is named tenth of the thirteen laymen present on those occasions: Riedinger, p. 14, line 31, p. 26, line 32, p. 36, line 13, p. 45, line 36, p. 162, line 2, p. 170, line 27, p. 180, line 31, p. 190, line 28, p. 262, line 28, p. 278, line 28, p. 400, line 28, p. 754, line 1 (= Mansi XI 209, 217, 221, 229, 317, 321, 328, 333, 380, 388, 457, 625). He is styled Θωμᾶ τοῦ ἐνδοξοτάτου ἀπὸ ὑπάτων; the old Latin version printed in Riedinger, p. 15, line 28, etc. (= Mansi XI 210, etc.) calls him "Thoma glorioso exconsule".
