Theophylaktos 59 was an archdeacon (at Rome); on 15 November 753 he was in the retinue of pope Stephen III (II) (Stephanos 8) when Stephanos 8 set out from Ticinum (Pavia) en route for Francia; he presumably accompanied Stephanos 8 from Rome when the pope set out on his journey on 14 October: Lib. Pont. 94. 23 ("Theophylactum archidiaconum"). When pope Stephanos 8 died (26 April 757) Theophylaktos 59 the archdeacon was one of the candidates to succeed; his supporters gathered at his home ("in eius domo"), but were in the minority, and Stephanos 8's brother Paul (Paulos 49) was elected; the supporters of Theophylaktos 59 then dispersed: Lib. Pont. 95. 1-2.
