Theophylaktos 58 was a cubicularius, patricius and exarchus Italiae; he was appointed exarch of Italy during the papacy of John VI (Ioannes 227) (701-705); he travelled from Sicily to Rome to take up his appointment ("huius temporibus venit Theophilactus cubicularius, patricius et exarchus Italiae de partes Siciliae in urbe Roma"), which was apparently opposed by the army of Italy ("militia totius Italiae") who advanced on Rome to put pressure on him ("vellens praefatum exarchum tribulare"); the pope intervened with them and calmed the rebels; when subsequently malicious accusers brought charges against some wealthy inhabitants of Rome, seeking to strip them of their properties, Theophylaktos 58 punished the accusers: Lib. Pont. 87. 1-2.
