Theophilos 52 was the hegoumenos of an unnamed monastery and the addressee of two letters from Theodoros 15 (Theodore the Stoudite): Theod. Stud., Ep. 39 (a. 809), Ep. 432 (a. 821/826) (both addressed Θεοφίλῳ ἡγουμένῳ). In 809 Theodoros 15, then in exile, wrote to Theophilos 52 to explain the arguments over the Moechian controversy; Theodoros 15 alludes to Theophilos 52 as his spiritual father (cited below); Theophilos 52 is styled τῇ ἁγιωσύνῃ σου and τὴν σὴν ὁσιότητα and addressed as τὸν ἐμὸν πνευματικὸν πατέρα, ὦ ἁγιώτατε and ὅσιε πάτερ: Theod. Stud., Ep. 39. Subsequently Theophilos 52 received a letter from Theodoros 15 reproaching Theophilos 52 for lapsing during the time of the iconoclast persecution under Leo V (Leo 15), when Theophilos 52 was ready to compromise in order to protect his monastery; Theophilos 52 is styled τῆς τιμιότητος σου and addressed as πάτερ: Theod. Stud., Ep. 432. Theophilos 52 was presumably older than Theodoros 15, to judge by the way he is addressed.
