Theophilos 49 was a protospatharios and sakellarios and was the addressee of two letters from the patriarch Photius (Photios 1), written between c. 859 and c. 886: Photius, Ep. 123 (I 161 Laourdas-Westerink) (addressed Θεοφίλῳ πρωτοσπαθαρίῳ), Ep. 193 (II 93ff. Laourdas-Westerink) (addressed Θεοφίλῳ πρωτοσπαθαρίῳ καὶ σακελλαρίῳ). In Ep. 123 he is urged to remain loyal to his friendship with Photius; in Ep. 193 he is invited by Photius to consider how he will administer justice in his present office - τῇ νυνί σου πράξει.
