Theophanes 48 was a patrikios, basilikos protospatharios and logothetes of the dromos; owner of a seal dateable to the second half of the ninth century: Zacos and Veglery 2510A. Obv.: cruciform monogram of Θεοτόκε βοήθει, with τω - σω - δου - λω in the corners. Rev.: Θεο[φα] - νους πατρ' β' α' - σπαθαρ' (καὶ) λο - γοθετ' του δ - ρομου. The name and titles read: Θεοφάνους πατρικίου, βασιλικοῦ πρωτοσπαθαρίου καὶ λογοθέτου τοῦ δρόμου. The beta is in the form of a Roman capital R, indicating a date not before the mid ninth century.
