Theophanes 46 was possibly a cleric; owner of a seal dateable to the ninth century: Zacos and Veglery 3199. The name and epithets read: Θεοφάνει ἁμαρτωλοῳ (sic), δούλῳ τῶν δούλων Χριστοῦ. The latter phrases perhaps indicate that Theophanes was a monk or cleric.
