Theophanes 17 was a basilikos spatharios and holder of another title or office of which the name is lost; owner of a seal dateable to the late seventh or early eighth century: Seibt, Bleisiegel I, no. 177. Seibt draws attention to the popularity of invocations like that on the obverse on seals of the late seventh and early eighth centuries.
