Theophanes 3 was a protospatharios in 788, when he was sent away by Eirene 1 when the empress cancelled an agreement with the Franks betrothing Constantine V (Konstantinos 8) to Charlemagne's (Karoulos 1) daughter Rotrud (Erythro 1): Theoph. AM 6281 (Θεοφάνην τὸν πρωτοσπαθάριον). The text suggests that he was sent to bring Maria 2 from the Armeniakoi to Constantinople.
