Theodotos 46 was a patrikios and the addressee of a letter from Theodoros 15 (Theodore the Stoudite) written between 821 and 826; he was of Bulgar origin and formerly a pagan, but had fled with his relatives to Byzantium and become a Christian (καὶ ὡς θαυμαστὰ τὰ ἔργα τοῦ μεγάλου καὶ μόνου θεοῦ ἡμῶν τῶν χριστιανῶν ὅτι ἐκάλεσέν σε ἐξ ἔθνους οὐχ ὁσίου εἰς τὴν σεπτὴν ἐπίγνωσιν τῆς ἀληθείας αὐτοῦ τρόπῳ τηλικούτῳ, δοκοῦντι μὲν ἀκουσίῳ, αὐθαιρέτῳ δ' ὅτι μάλιστα, σὺν τοῖς συνεξελθοῦσιν ἀγχιστεῦσιν ἐπείπερ ἄλλως οὐ δεδοκίμασται τῇ θείᾳ οἰκονομίᾳ ἀφαρπάσαι ὑμᾶς τῆς ἀθεότητος; later χριστιανὸς ἀντ' ἐθνικοῦ χρηματίζων; later πεφευγὼς τῆς πολυθεϊας καὶ Βουλγαρικῆς εἰδωλολατρείας τὴν δυσσέβειαν: p. 699, lines 7-12, 16, 18-19); he wrote to Theodoros 15 asking to meet him and obtain instruction, and Theodoros replied that circumstances made their meeting difficult but sent him a letter setting out Christian beliefs and explaining the arguments in favour of the veneration of icons; Theodotos is styled τὴν πανεύφημον ὑπεροχὴν (p. 699, line 2) and addressed as δέσποτα τιμιώτατε (p. 700, line 54) and φίλε καὶ ἀδελφὲ καὶ δέσποτα (p. 701, line 66): Theod. Stud., Ep. 479, pp. 699-701 (addressed Θεοδότῳ πατρικίῳ). In one MS (cod. Vatic. gr. 1432, f. 357) the name of the addressee is given as Theodoros.
