Theodotos 9 was spatharios and doux of Calabria; owner of a seal dateable to the eighth century: DOSeals I 4.7 = Zacos and Veglery 2488. Obv.: cruciform monogram of Θεοτόκε (or Κύριε) βοήθει, with [τω] - [σω] - δου - λω in the corners. Rev.: [Θεο] - δοτου [β'] - σπα' (καὶ) δου - κ' Καλα - [βριας ]. The name and titles read: Θεοδότου (βασιλικοῦ) σπαθαρίου καὶ δουκὸς Καλαβρίας. Nesbitt and Oikonomides, DOSeals I, note ad loc. record two other specimens (Gray Birch, BMSeals, 15, Schlumberger, Sig., 220) which belonged to Theodotos basilikos protospatharios and doux of Calabria and are similar to the Dumbarton Oaks specimen; they "may refer to the same person at a later stage of his career". The seal in Schlumberger, Sig., p. 220, no. 3 (= Salinas, "Sigilli diplomatici" IV, p. 267, no. 7) (dated eighth or ninth century) reads: obv.: invocative monogram of Θεοτόκε βοήθει with the legend τῷ σῷ δούλῳ; rev.: Θεοδότῳ β(ασιλικῷ) (πρωτο)σπαθ(αρίῳ) (καὶ) δουκ() Καλλ(αβρίας).
