Textual SourcesNikaia, Second Council of (Seventh Ecumenical Council, a. 787) (Mansi XII-XIII) (conciliar)

Theodotos 6 was bishop of Palaia or Palata in Hellespontus; in 787 he attended the Second Council of Nikaia (the Seventh Ecumenical Council) and was probably present at all eight sessions, from 24 September to 23 November 787, although his name is missing from the names recorded at the second session: Mansi XII 995-XIII 486. In the list of those present at the first and seventh sessions he is styled Θεοδότου ἐπισκόπου Παλαιῶν: Mansi XII 995, XIII 369 (Παλαίων). In the list of names from the fourth session he is styled Θεόδοτος ἐπίσκοπος Παλατῶν: Mansi XIII 144 (the Latin version, at XIII 143, calls him "episcopus Palatensium"). In the list of subscriptions from the seventh session he is styled Θεόδοτος ἀνάξιος ἐπίσκοπος Παλαίων: Mansi XIII 389 (the Latin version, at XIII 390, has "episcopus Palaeensium"). The identity of his see is not certain. He always appears among a group of bishops from Hellespontus, but no place called Palaia or Palata seems to be known in that province. The suggestion of Ramsay, Historical Geography, p. 163, that the name is an error for Parion is a mistake, because the bishop of Parion was Sisinnios 15. At the fourth session Theodotos 6 subscribed the statements read out from the Fathers in support of the veneration of icons: Mansi XIII 144. At the seventh he subscribed the statement of the faith adopted by the Council: Mansi XIII 389.
