Symbatios 5 is called: Sabbatios (Theoph., Zon.); Smb't (Chron. 1234). The patrikios of Armenia, Symbatios 5 surrendered Armenia to the Arabs following the defeat of the Romans by Muhammad 2 in 692/693 (when the Slavs defected): Theoph. AM 6185 (ὁ πατρίκιος Ἀρμενίας), Zon. XIV 22. 22 (ὁ τῆς Ἀρμενίας ἐπιστατῶν Σαββάτιος ὁ πατρίκιος), Chron. 1234, ¤150 (p. 296) ("at this time a man of the Armenian patricians, whose name was Sambaat (Smb't), handed over Armenia to Muhammad son of Marwan"). To judge by his name Symbatios 5 was himself an Armenian.
