Stephanos 144 was primate of Byzacena; in 645/646 he was joint author of a letter from the African bishops to the bishop of Rome, Theodoros 49, attacking the monothelete patriarch of Constantinople, Paulos 2; the letter was read out at the Lateran Council in October 649: Conc. Lat., pp. 66-70, cf. p. 70, line 27 (Στέφανος ἐπίσκοπος τοῦ πρώτου θρόνου τῆς ἐν τῷ Βυζακίῳ συνόδου), p. 72, lines 1-2 (τὸν τῆς κατὰ τὸ Βυζάκιον προκαθήμενον ἁγίας συνόδου Στέφανον τὸν εὐλαβέστατον), p. 66, line 24, p. 67, line 23, p. 73, line 1. He was also the joint author with the bishops of Byzacena of a letter to the emperor Constans II (Konstans 1) urging him to persuade Paulos to abandon the monothelete heresy; this letter, probably also written in 645/646, also was read out at the Lateran Council in October 649; the name of Stephanos headed the list of the bishops who subscribed the letter: Conc. Lat., pp. 74-77, cf. p. 74, line 4, p. 76, line 13 (Στέφανος ἐπίσκοπος τοῦ πρώτου θρόνου), pp. 75, lines 3-4, 77, line 11.
