Stephanos 140 was asekretis (ἀσηκρῆτις τῇ ἀξίᾳ) in the reign of Theophilos 5; acquainted with Michael 51 Syncellus, Theodoros 68 and Theophanes 6, Stephanos 140 became a supporter of the veneration of icons under their influence; when betrayed to Theophilos 5 and tortured, he recanted and supported the iconoclasts; later, influenced by letters from Michael 51, he returned to the iconophile cause, but again he wavered under threats from the emperor; eventually he returned firmly to the iconophile cause and was exiled by Theophilos 5 and his property was confiscated; Stephanos 140 and Kallonas 1 are described as noble and learned (τοὺς εὐγενεστάτους καὶ λογιμωτάτους ἄνδρας): Vita Mich. Sync. 17.
