Stephanos 139 was the addressee of a letter from the patriarch Photius (Photios 1), probably written between 859 and Sept. 867; he had formerly been an enemy of the veneration of icons (εἰκονομάχε) but subsequently changed his mind and converted to orthodoxy: Photius, Ep. 214 (II 117ff. Laourdas-Westerink) (addressed Στεφάνῳ ὀρθοδοξήσαντι). He was perhaps a monk or a priest.
