Stephanos 85 was bishop of Naples; it was alleged by the antipope Constantine (Konstantinos 140) at the Council of Rome in 769 that Stephanos 85 was a layman when he was elected as bishop of Naples ("Stephanus episcopus Neapolitanae civitatis et ipse laicus repente episcopus consecratus est"); Konstantinos 140 made the same charge also against Sergios 54 (archbishop of Ravenna); as he made these charges, Konstantinos 140 was assaulted by the assembled bishops and driven out: Lib. Pont. 96. 19. See also Stephanos 61.
