Stephanos 56 was ἐπὶ τῶν δεήσεων under the emperor Theophilos 5; when allegations were made against Antonios the younger (Antonios 12) of wrongly confiscating properties belonging to followers of the rebel Thomas the Slav (Thomas 7), Stephanos 56 was placed in charge of the enquiry; an avaricious man, he detained Antonios 12 for five months, at first treating him mildly and later with great brutality before releasing him: Vita Anton. Iun. (BHG 142) 32-33. The date was probably 829 or 830, at the start of the reign of Theophilos 5.
