Stephanos 53 was metropolitan bishop of Crete; owner of a seal dateable to the eighth or ninth century: DOSeals II 36.11 = Zacos and Veglery 1294 = Laurent, Corpus V 3, no. 1799 = Tsougarakis, SBS 2, p. 144, no. 1. Obv.: bust of St Titos, with the legend ὁ ἅγιος Τίτος. Rev.: cruciform monogram of Στέφανον, with a circular inscription, the whole reading: Στέφανον Κρήτης πρόεδρον, Χριστέ, σῴζοις (or similar).
