Textual SourcesNikaia, Second Council of (Seventh Ecumenical Council, a. 787) (Mansi XII-XIII) (conciliar)

Spyridon 1 was bishop of Chytroi (Kythroi, also called Palaia) in Cyprus; in 787 he attended the Second Council of Nikaia (the Seventh Ecumenical Council) and was probably present at all eight sessions, from 24 September to 23 November 787, although his name is missing from the list of those at the second session (on 26 September 787): Mansi XII 995-XIII 486. In the list of those present at the first session he is styled Σπυρίδωνος ἐπισκόπου Κύπρων (sic): Mansi XII 995. In the list of those present at the seventh session he is styled Σπυρίδωνος ἐπισκόπου Παλαιᾶς ἤτοι Κύθρων: Mansi XIII 368 (the Latin version, at XIII 367, calls him "episcopo Palaeae id est Cythrensium"). Elsewhere he is styled Σπυρίδων ἐπίσκοπος Παλαιᾶς Κύθρων (sic), Mansi XIII 144 (the Latin version, at XIII 143, calls him "episcopus Palaeae Cythrensium"); or ἐπίσκοπος Κύθρων, Mansi XIII 388. At the fourth session he subscribed the statements read out from the Fathers in support of the veneration of icons: Mansi XIII 144. At the seventh session he subscribed the statement of the faith adopted by the Council: Mansi XIII 388. His name, with those of Leo 31 and Anthimos 3, has perhaps been omitted from the list of names at the second session in error.
