In 843 or 844 Soudales 1 was one of those sent by the empress Theodora 2 to convert or exterminate the Paulicians; the violence of their persecution drove the Paulicians to revolt (see Karbeas 1 for dates and circumstances): Theoph. Cont. IV 16 (p. 165), Scyl., p. 92. His colleagues were Leo 109 and Andronikos 3.
